Secaucus, NJ Kitchen Flip

The Existing Condition
This project involved a split-level home in Secaucus, NJ, for a family of three. The existing galley kitchen presented significant challenges: it severely lacked counter space, featured an awkward layout, and had a refrigerator inconveniently located at the top of a stair landing, impeding circulation between the living and family rooms. As the homeowners loved to cook, the uninspiring layout was a major pain point.

Our Design Approach
KARMA co/lab worked closely with the owners to understand their vision for an ideal kitchen. We then developed and presented several design concepts, which included keeping the existing kitchen footprint, relocating the kitchen to the dining room, and a third, more transformative option: removing the wall between the existing kitchen and dining areas to create a large, open-concept space with maximized storage.
The owners ultimately chose the expansive, open-concept solution. To realize this vision, we strategically raised the sill on an existing window and designed an efficient L-shaped kitchen layout, complete with a functional island for prep work. The result is a highly functional, beautiful, and inspiring space that perfectly supports the family’s passion for cooking and enhances their daily living.
